Longwangmiao Fort

The army hospital of Japanese Guandong army is the name of Longwangmiao Fort.  The   fort had been constructed since May 1942, which was expected to be finished in five years and was stopped for the surrender.

In the name of military, the 693 army usurped the civil place in the Longwangmiao area. They ordered the administration of Jinzhou to buy 5000 Chinese acres land at low price. The area is 61% of the total cultivated area. People there had to work in the N0.693 army work site to maintain the livelihood. Some  were even destitute and homeless.

The main part of the engineering of 693 army hospital is a multilayer whole construction which locates between Huangjiaying(now in Dalian army institute courtyard) and Mushan(north of the Zhangjiatun of Longwangmiao), which has basement and is 500 meters long. For its length, it therefore had the name ¡°the Asian First Corridor ¡± at that time. Besides the principal part, there are cave, water tank, boiler room, road from Jinzhou to Huangjiaying, special-purpose railroad in Gaojiadianzi, traffic lane from Gaojiadianzi via Diaoyutai to principal part site, man power lane from Beidahe north bank to the principal part site and sand work sites and special purpose-brick kiln so on. The scope is quite large.

The construction office of Manchu 3693 army was in charge of this project. In the office, the construction department was responsible for technology, materials, general affairs, the guard brigade for security and the escaped laborer. The main part is construction department which has Manchuria central heating company, Manchuria electricity, construction development and other construction teams. Suzuki, the minister of the construction corporation, contracted most of jobs.  He subcontracted them to the other 11 corporation such as ¡°Zhendong¡±.

The majority of laborers were from outside areas, especially from Shandong province.  They  were deceived by the words that the work was easy, the food was rice and flour, one year wages was hundreds of yuan and the money can be posted to home at autumn . The foreman Zhao dongyan honestly said: from February to May in 1942, he recruited about 260 laborers. Then the laborers  were taken photo  and  registered by the Japanese. They  were shipped to Dalian.

The big foreman Jiang yinchen, working for the Zhegdong corporation,  being executed after the liberation, said that: ¡°I deceived four hundred or five hundred people from Shandong province etc. to build the airport, warehouse, streets. The laborers with good dream became prisoners once they were sent to the ship with one meal per day, the work site provided them arduous service, inhuman treatment and death every moment.¡±

The Longwangmiao military engineering was called 693 Army Hospital, which was a secret place to produce bacteria and do experiment, according to the investigation on the remains and what the laborers said. The project personnel destroyed the massive constructions data after Japanese surrendered. The eyewitness Zhang Weitang recollected that the project blueprints were destroyed dozens of days after 8.15,  the burning lasted for three days. Ji deyi, a translator then in the construction office of Guandong 693 Army, recollected that: ¡°when I  was drinking with guard Gaoqiao, he said that the hospital would be germ demonstration plant. When I asked what should it be used for, he said it was military. then he emphasis that I  should keep secret, and that if I gave out , I  would be killed. He also said the building then being constructed under ground that should not be seen on the ground, the coolie here would be killed. I should go away as soon as I  could. Then I left. ¡±Zhang xiaoqi, another surviving laborer, said he had heard the old foreman Banxia working over the blueprint with the young Korean foreman , they mumbled that the blueprint was from Osaka. The  building was to be germ factory.

The real use of the project has to be proven by other data. In  fact, the engineering killed 8000 Chinese laborers in its three years¡¯ construction.
